From the Principal

Welcome to Berney Elementary School, where our students learn for TODAY and TOMORROW!
We take pride in being an "Accelerated Reader" school (as evidenced by our student check out rate averaging 2,500 books per month ), having super parents (parents who volunteer their time, resources, and support), an outstanding staff (who are child centered and offer nurturing learning environments to children), and the
best kids in the world!
At Berney we believe literacy is the foundation for celebrating a lifelong of learning for children. To foster this vision our school is currently focusing on student attitudes and attributes promoting a positive self concept, on literacy as the foundation for lifelong learning and on technology as a tool to broaden and enrich ALL disciplines.
Berney Elementary School has 447 kindergarten through fifth grade elementary school students. Our staff consists of 34 certified teachers (60% with advanced degrees), 12 instructional assistants, and 9 classified staff. Our school promotes collaboration, shared decision making and site-based management as a framework for school operations.
We offer child centered learning environments through the use of team teaching, co-operative learning groups, looped classrooms, inclusion, and grade level/cross grade level planning. Our staff shares the common belief that "the relationship we have among ourselves is KEY to our success with the children."
As principal of Berney Elementary, I believe our best resources for student learning and literacy lie within our teachers, school staff, parents and community members. Our school is the heart of our community, and maintains quality education for students through strong instructional skills of the staff and by nurturing parent and community partnerships resulting in volunteerism for our school.
At Berney, through the use of technology, the world is our classroom! Our library, the "literacy hub" of our school, has an
OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog)
station, as well as the latest digital presentation equipment. Children
and staff are able to access information electronically through the
Internet, CD's, and automated searching. Our campus is networked, giving each classroom access to all library information programs. Teachers collaborate to integrate classroom themes with library instruction and usage. Each classroom has computers for curriculum integration. For group learning, our students enjoy a computer lab.
I am so proud of our school, and I invite you to browse our Web pages to see for yourself all of the great things we are doing to enrich the learning experiences of our students!!
Sincerely,
David Talley, Principal
