2008-2009 will be a year full of changes for Edison staff and students. We are excited to be able to watch the daily progress of the construction of our new school. If everything goes well, we will be able to move things into the new building the last week of school in the spring. The old building will be demolished over the summer.
We are pleased to welcome Patrick McFetridge, PE teacher, Jennifer Nicholson, Library Media Specialist, and Lorelie Moothart, School Nurse to the Edison staff. Patrick transferred from Prospect Point, Jennifer comes from Vero Beach, Florida, and Lorelie has been a nurse at Walla Walla General Hospital. Genie Huntemann, fifth grade teacher, has returned from a year’s leave of absence.
Improvement in Mathematics will be a major academic focus this year. Teachers are learning to use new curricular materials to better meet the new state standards. We will also be working to create a more respectful and civil school. Edison students generally are a well-behaved group, but we can all work on how we say things to each other to help everyone feel comfortable. We know that students are able to learn better when they know they are in a safe environment both physically and emotionally.
Teachers look forward to using electronic grading programs and electronic report cards. All teachers are receiving training in a grading program called Easy Grade Pro. This is our first step in moving toward on-line grades that can be checked from home. Secondary schools in Walla Walla have this tool, and elementary teachers and families will also have this great communication opportunity in the near future.
We anticipate a busy and rewarding year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in the Edison family for their patience and extra work as we navigate around construction, playground, and parking challenges
