INTERNET SAFETY TIPS from the FBI—

· Never give out personal information such as your name, home address, school name, or telephone number in a chat room or on bulletin boards.  Also, never send a picture of yourself to someone you chat with on the computer without your parent’s permission.

· Never write to someone who has made you feel uncomfortable or scared.

· Do not meet someone or have them visit you without the permission of your parents.

· Tell your parents right away if you read anything on the Internet that makes you feel uncomfortable.

· Remember that people online may not be who they say they are.  Someone who says that “she” is a “12-year-old girl” could really be an older man.

To read more about new privacy rules, visit the Federal Trade Commission’s Web site at http://www.ftc.gov.  There is a special section just for kids.

Also, download the FBI’s “A Parent’s Guide to Internet Safety” either in English or Spanish at:  http://www.fbi.gov/publications/pguide/pguidee.htm

What can YOU do to help your child with their learning:

  • Read to your child or have your child read aloud to you. Research shows that there is a direct correlation between the amount of time children spend reading each week and high test scores.

  • Ask your child's teacher what specific skills your child will be expected to learn during the school year.

  • Ask your child's teacher to give you specific areas that your child needs to improve in. Reinforce these areas when working with your child on their homework assignments.

  • Show that you value your child's education: ask your child what they learned at school that day and ask them questions.

Keep open communication between home and school.
