Through the generosity of Garrison Middle School PTSA it has been possible to have authors visit during each of the last five years.  This experience encourages students in their own writing attempts and creates added enthusiasm for reading.

Dogs, from tree-dwelling prehistoric species to today's domestic bichons frises, are the subject of this comprehensive overview from veteran nonfiction author Halls. A fascinating survey of early dog descendants, which roamed the globe just after dinosaurs, is followed by a brief look at the dog family tree, including an introduction to taxonomic terms such as kingdom and phylum.

Profiles albino animals of several species, including gorilla, alligator, bat, and penguin, describing their unique features and the special challenges to survival they face, and includes information on human albinism. Also provides a glossary and a list of related Web sites.

Though bones are the most common dinosaur fossils, occasionally soft tissue such as skin and muscles became fossilized. These are referred to as mummies. After clearly explaining the fossilization process, the book spotlights six significant dinosaur mummies, from the 1908 discoveries of an Edmontosaurus skeleton wrapped in its skin to the 2000 find of Leonardo, a Brachylophosaurus fossil with skin, bones, muscles, internal organs, stomach contents, and a neck pouch.

The Dark Hills Divide

Inquisitive twelve-year-old Alexa Daley is spending another summer in the walled town of Bridewell. This year, she is set on solving the mystery of what lies beyond the walls. Legend says the walls were built to keep out an unnamed evil that lurks in the forests and The Dark Hills. But what exactly is it that the townspeople are so afraid of?

Beyond the Valley of ThornsI

Alexa thought her troubles were over when she defeated the man who threatened to bring down Bridwell from within. But now that the walls around her have fallen, a new, unexpected threat has risen from outside. Suddenly, Alexa is involved in a battle much, much larger than her own life-a battle in which she is destined to play a key role.

Patrick Carman, who lives in the Northwest, was in his mid-thirties before conceiving The Land of Elyon series, and writing his first book, The Dark Hills Divide. An entrepreneur like his father, Carman can't remember a time when he wasn't searching for a way to creatively express himself, an urge that led him to start an advertising agency, then create board games, and finally develop and sell a dotcom before finding the thing he was obviously meant to do: write youth fiction.
