Green Park Elementary School is part of the Walla Walla School District #140.

Guidelines for a Paws-itive Playground Experience

Playground Goal:  To provide a safe and orderly environment, where all children will have the opportunity to practice positive social skills.

Paws-itive Playground Behaviors

Always try your hardest and do your best.

  •  I will be helpful and supportive of other students on the playground.

  •  I'll pitch-in and pick up litter when I see it

  •  When the bell rings to line-up, I'll stop playing and walk to my line, holding any play equipment I might have, as I walk.

  •  Whenever I need assistance I will politely request a supervisor's help.

        Be responsible.

  •  I will play only in the designated play areas, not in areas that are off-limits for playing

  •  I will be responsible for leaving the playground immediately after school unless I am waiting for a bus or a ride. When I need to wait for a ride, I'll wait in the designated area.

  •  I will use the crosswalks when coming to and leaving school. Also, if! ride my bike, I will walk it while on school grounds.

  •  I will leave unsafe objects at home, such as knives, hardballs, wooden bats, etc.

  •  I will not eat or drink on the playground during recess, except on designated treat days.

      Cooperate with others

  •  I will leave the school grounds during school hours only after permission has been obtained from a supervisor.

  •  I will stay outside in the morning before school, recess, and noon time unless I have a "pass" from the supervisor to enter the building.

  •  I will wait for my turn patiently and politely.

  •  I will share the playground equipment willingly.

  •  I will include other children in my games and I will respect the games of others.

  •  When I choose to participate in a playground game, I'll agree to follow the game rules.

  •  I will always demonstrate good sportsmanship.

       Discover lessons from mistakes

  • I will always be honest.

  • When I get into trouble for a mistake I'll. . .

  •      1. listen carefully

  •      2. politely ask questions if I don't understand

  •      3. think about and correct my mistake

  • .I will try to be a successful problem-solver on my own. But, when I need assistance I will take these steps...

  •      1. I'll work cooperatively with a student conflict manager (STOP kid). If my problem continues,

  •      2. I'll request the assistance of a supervisor. If my problem continues,

  •      3. I'll work cooperatively with the social worker to find a solution.

  • I will take responsibility for my mistakes, as well as any consequence that happens because of my behavior.

       Everyone deserves respect-you, too.

  •  I will use only acceptable and appropriate language.

  •  I will not throw unsafe objects such as rocks, sticks, ice, etc.

  •  I will not spit on another person or on the school grounds.

  •  I will play in a safe manner and avoid rough and inappropriate body contact.

  •  I will be careful not to damage another person's property or clothing.

  •  I will not choose to hurt another person with my actions or my words.

  •  I will not use put-downs.

  •  I understand that I need to respect other people's opinions even when they are not the same as my own.

Playground Games:

The recesses at Green Park are viewed as an opportunity for students to learn a variety of social skills. We encourage organized play, in that it allows students an opportunity to learn to be interdependent, to cooperate with others, to follow the sequence of-rules that govern the game, etc.

NOTE: The purpose of our behavior intervention efforts is to increase a child's behavioral success at school. However, we recognize that you are your child's ultimate teacher. Should you wish to employ a behavior intervention plan that differs from our school-wide plan, we invite you to call the office.

Social Skills Training: We also offer instruction in the areas of anger management, impulse control and empathy training. Our social worker will work with small groups or individual students to increase their success in these areas as needed.

Encouragement Procedures:  All staff will consistently encourage responsible behavior through positive, meaningful interactions with students. The following activities and/or programs will facilitate this intent:

1.  Friendly interactions from playground supervisors and greeters.

2  "Panther Eyes Axe Watching!" (phase 1) Panther slips will be given randomly to students demonstrating "paws"itive behaviors on the playground. Each duty supervisor will have up to 3 awards to give out per recess.

3.  "Panther Eyes Axe Watching!" (phase 2) Students will be encouraged to participate in a school-wide effort to earn a "Paws"-itive Celebration. This can be earned by filling a hall bulletin board with Panther Slips. Once the board is completely filled, a celebration will occur. However, students who have been issued a Yellow Slip during that term will not have the privilege of participation unless they have performed a school-community service resulting in a positive contribution and "clears the slate",

 4.  Spirit Days will also be planned regularly to nurture positive and playful interactions for staff and students, resulting in a unified Green Park spirit. Each Friday will be Green & White day.

 5.  Additionally, one day per month will be identified as a theme day (i.e. Hat Day, Multicultural Day, Beach Day).
