Academic Support Program

We began an after school tutoring program in 1999 to support students who were struggling with grade level skills in third through fifth grade. Teachers or parents may refer students for this opportunity. AmeriCorps, Whitman College students, and Green Park staff work as tutors.
The hour begins with a snack and chat time. The order of business is to complete left 'over class assignments, begin your homework, or work on long term class projects. If all work is completed the student will read a book with their tutor or take an Accelerated Reader computer test.
Lack of organization seems to plague most of these students. Students and tutors discuss the study strategies needed for success when they are out of the program. Such as:

Have a regular time and place to work each day.
Organize you daily calendar in your notebook.
Mark down each assignment and code it.
Elect to the shortest or your favorite assignment first.
Write down how long you think it should take.
On with it! GET STARTED !!
Record when it is completed.
Keep your homework in the same place at home so you can bring it back on time!

The tutor will help them organize their backpacks, and even clean out their desks to find."lost assignments"!  It has been a bonding as well as a learning time. Parents have said this extra support really helps their child.
